Castiglione d’Orcia is a hamlet that sits 540 meters above the valley floor of the River Orcia, replete with stone streets and panoramic vistas. Its origins date back to 714 and indeed it possesses a rustic characteristic and peaceful atmosphere. At all times of day, but particularly in the evenings, locals gather around a charming piazza, anchored by a travertine fountain dating to 1618. It is no wonder that the village is considered a ‘hidden gem’ by residents of the Val D’Orcia.
In Rocca d’Orcia, a short uphill walk from Castiglione, visitors can climb to the top of the Rocca a Tentennaro, an ancient fortress that offers spectacular views of the surrounding land. From here you will see Monte Amiata, rolling hills and verdant pastures that change color in every season, and the rocky terrain of some of the country’s most prestigious land for wine production.

The townhouse
Completely restructured in 2018, Casa D’Orcia was formerly home to the village’s mayor and midwife. Centrally located, it is around the corner from the main piazza, where guests will find a cafe, a gourmet shop, a bread baker, a small supermarket, and a butcher.
The house is earthquake proof with all natural materials: breathable plaster, exposed brick, original wood throughout, and stone floors on the ground level. White-washed beams give the house an airy, ethereal and fresh feel.
On the top floor, the spacious primary bedroom has 180 degree views of the village and surrounding land, as well as a window in the oversized shower. The second bedroom, large in size, overlooks the budding jasmine and stone of the meandering path below. The house has three full bathrooms, each with an oversized shower and stone sink.
On the ‘primo piano’ is a light-filled kitchen with dishwasher and new appliances as well as a living area. The house is appointed with beautiful linen bedding and serve ware from Italian luxury brand Society, tastefully curated ceramics made by Tuscan artisans, and vintage art and decor.

Absolutely. The ground level of the townhouse has plenty of storage space for bikes and gear.
-
Yes. One of the reasons the Val D’Orcia is so desirable is because it is an all year round destination. Winters are mild and sunny, autumns are magnificent, spring is the most verdant and colorful, and summer is the time for local white wine and late evening picnics.
